Access

Airplane

If you come to Larissa from abroad, you will most likely travel by plane. Most airlines have routes to Athens International Airport (IATA: ATH), and/or Macedonia Airport in Thessaloniki (IATA: SKG). Occasionally you may also be served by the airport of Nea Aghialos (Volos) (IATA: VOL) which is very close to Larissa, but operates mainly in the summer months with charter flights.

You should better use a train or coach (bus) to come to Larissa from either Athens (3+ hours) or Thessaloniki (1.5 hours) – please, read the following sections.

Railway

Larissa is located on the main railway axis of Greece and is served by many routes of the Hellenic Train. The journey from Athens takes about 3 hours, and from Thessaloniki about 1.5 hours. The railway station of the Hellenic Train in Larissa is located in the city and is served by city bus and taxi.

Coach

The Larissa Intercity Bus Station (KTEL Larissa) operates over 100 modern buses throughout the prefecture, as well as in Athens, Thessaloniki, Ioannina, Volos, Karditsa, Trikala. The station of KTEL Larissa is located 5 minutes (walk) from the center, while KTEL operators from other prefectures that serve Larissa (eg KTEL Trikala) have a separate station in other parts of the city.

City Bus

Larissa City Bus (public transport) serves the wider urban complex (and nearby Municipalities) with a fleet of articulated buses, minibusses, midibuses, and regular buses. All buses are accessible by disabled people. and have an air conditioning (heating and cooling) unit.

Although the distances in Larissa are short compared to bigger cities and a bike (or even a walk) takes you almost everywhere, route 9 is what serves the Gaiopolis campus as it ends inside it. You will probably find interest in two special urban routes, the Culture Route and the City Route.

Taxi

Although more expensive than public transport, traveling by TAXI provides flexibility and speed, and is sometimes the only way to go, especially considering the intense city center parking problem. There are TAXI locations scattered throughout the city while TAXI is parked inside the Gaiopolis campus (in the area where the city bus ends).
