Onoufrios Charalampous

Associate Professor

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the module, students will be familiar with the fundamental concepts of meteorology and the digital technologies used in the field, and will be able to:

  • collect data from the weather station and online sources,
  • process and analyze meteorological data,
  • apply digital system solutions to problems related to meteorological data.

Indicative Module Content

The theoretical component of the module covers selected topics in atmospheric physics:

  • Basic concepts of meteorology
  • Meteorological instruments and measurements
  • Atmospheric thermodynamics
  • Radiation in the atmosphere
  • Atmospheric dynamics
  • Air masses and fronts
  • Numerical weather prediction

This background is combined with a practical application of data science techniques on the use of time series data, APIs, CSV and GRIB files, charts, and maps. As part of the assignments, students collect measurements from the department weather station and forecasts from third-party sources. Following, they process and visualize the data using Python and its libraries (NumPy, matplotlib, pandas, requests, earthkit, and others).
